Shoalhaven B&B owner warms her home with solar

With temperatures dipping as low as 3 degrees in winter, you can’t blame Bellawongarah homeowner Glenys Gray for wanting heated floors.

While that warmth makes for a cosy home in the cooler months, rising electricity costs led the Shoalhaven bed and breakfast operator to investigate the savings on offer with solar.

“My geothermal underfloor heating was costing me too much,” says Ms Gray.

More affordable than ever before

“Solar wasn’t affordable when I finished building 10 years ago and I didn’t want to spoil the appearance of my new home.”

Fast-forward a decade later and the three-bedroom house and adjoining two-bedroom bed and breakfast are being powered by a 6.6-kilowatt system with 20 panels and a 5-kilowatt inverter.

“The geothermal underfloor heating is about $4 per day and comes on in the early hours of the morning until about 11am if it’s a sunny day. It’s set on 19 degrees,” Ms Gray notes.

Full-service solar system install

Ms Gray had the system installed by One Power Solar, who advised her on the right set up for her power needs as well as up to four guests on weekends.

“I answered a Facebook ad and One Power sales representative Adrian Green was so helpful, I didn’t bother to get another quote,” she says.

“I found I didn’t have to sell shares and I could put it at the back on the bed and breakfast roof.”

That decision has paid off for Ms Gray who says her first power bill since going solar was half of the previous bill – even including two months of winter.
